Photojournalism

Photojournalism expertise is something I’ve always felt I’ve lacked. Writing, editing, and leading are the things that have always come natural to me. Photos? Not so much. But that doesn’t mean I don’t push myself to try new things nor push editors to step outside of the box.

Learning Photography

A camera used to be one of the scariest things someone could put in front of me. It’s not that I didn’t know what I was doing- my adviser taught me extremely well in journalism my freshman year. It’s just not something I was comfortable with. Despite this, photography isn’t necessarily something I shy away from. Though I may not put it into practice all the time, I know how to tell a good picture from a great one based on aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

First-year photos

My first year on staff, I jumped on a story opportunity that I heard of from my English teacher. His best friend who has Glioblastoma was coming to the school to talk to the Philosophy Club about what he had learned since his diagnosis. As anyone could tell, this photo is not the strongest. I definitely wouldn’t classify it as great. But, I tried. I took that camera to the classroom, with no outside help, and made my skill set and resources work.

Compositional photos

This certain photo was also out of my comfort zone. Though there was no crazy action to capture or a super busy shot, the subject was standing alone, which reflected the story in that he was the first SHS band student to go to Indiana All-State Band in 26 years. His journey in this particular avenue of high school band was done alone, and I wanted to capture that in the photo. The decent level of exposure was also something I was proud of, though it still felt like new territory.

Photos since COVID

Since the pandemic, gathering photos has been one of the more difficult tasks to accomplish. A lot of our photos have been contributed just because timing doesn’t work out or people don’t feel that comfortable leaving their homes. Even with this, we still ensure day in and day out that we are providing readers with quality photos. This specific photo was not contributed, but it was used in a unique photo gallery we ran this year to demonstrate how much the times have changed.
