Fact-checking on Socials with MediaWise

MediaWise is a media and digital literacy initiative through the Poynter Institute that wishes to teach its viewers about fact from fiction and the spread of mis/disinformation. I was a Teen Fact Checker on MediaWise from January through November of 2020. During my time there, I produced multiple fact-checks, whether I wrote the script for the video, recorded it, or did both. It taught me many things about the digital world, but most importantly, the skills I learned very easily and effectively rolled over into my immediate high school journalism experience.

This particular fact check was posted a few weeks before the Presidential Election, something we all felt rock our nation this past year. I wrote, revised and recorded the script that disproved a widespread piece of information on Twitter that former President Barack Obama was responsible for the dangers of the cages at the Southern border.

In this video, I used various fact-checking skills, ensured I had good lighting, and pieced videos together to create a couple-minutes long fact-check that was later posted to MediaWise’s various social platforms.
